2003 Ford Focus universal-joints — are they used?

A classic universal-joint causes speed fluctuation when running at an angle, which would lead to vibration, shudder and accelerated wear during cornering. With no longitudinal prop shaft and the need for smooth power delivery under steering lock, the Focus sticks with CV joints by design.

Worth noting: there is a small universal-joint in the steering intermediate shaft on many Focus variants, but that’s part of the steering column, not the drivetrain. It’s serviced or replaced as a steering component, not as a “driveline U-joint”.
