Vacuum Solenoid Valves

Vacuum solenoid valves are a valve that is electrically operated that switches vacuum on and off. The valves are used to control various vehicle functions including turbocharger boost, EGR valves, Evaporative Emission Control and to engage different drive configurations in a 4x4 when going off road. (eg 2 wheel drive, 4 wheel drive, locked hubs & diff) Due to the popularity of using vacuum a lot of vehicles now run vacuum pumps and have vacuum reservoirs to hold an additional supply.

Vacuum operated devices in cars are not a new thing and have been around a long time. The first Holden built had vacuum operated windscreen wipers. A lot of under dash climate control units use vacuum to switch between settings.

Popular Questions Asked

What problems you can have with Vacuum Solenoid Valves?

Hoses - Most vacuum systems have rubber hoses running between components holding the vacuum. These can harden and split over time allowing air leaks into the system.

Valve - The valve itself can fail. Whether due to use or age.

Solenoid - This is the electrical component that switches the valve. It can be anything from a loose electrical connection to a failure of the solenoid itself due to moisture and corrosion. When operated a click should be heard as it engages and disengages. If you are not getting that, chances are it has failed. If you can't hear it, by placing a finger on the solenoid body, you should be able to feel it operate.

Are Vacuum Solenoid Valves easy to replace?

Depending on their mounting location, yes, they are relatively easy to replace. Diagnosing the issue will be the tricky part. Check the vacuum hoses and if they need it replace them as well.
