How and where to use Flexigauge
Flexigauge is a straightforward and reliable tool used to measure clearances, particularly in engine and machinery assembly. It is a soft, compressible strip of plastic that flattens during use, providing an accurate reading when compared against a reference scale. Commonly employed in automotive and mechanical engineering, Flexigauge is ideal for gauging clearances in bearing surfaces, such as crankshaft journals and engine bearings.
Preparing to Use Flexigauge
Before using Flexigauge, it is essential to clean the surfaces where it will be applied. Any debris, oil, or particles could interfere with accuracy. Ensure that the target components—whether crankshaft journals, connecting rod bearings, or camshaft bearings—are properly installed but not lubricated. This allows the Flexigauge to sit flush between surfaces during measurement. Having the corresponding reference chart on hand is also important.
Steps for Using Flexigauge
To use Flexigauge, cut a strip slightly shorter than the width of the surface to be measured. Place it longitudinally on the required surface, such as a journal or a bearing cap. Carefully reassemble the components, applying the appropriate torque to the bolts. Avoid rotating or moving the parts, as this could damage the Flexigauge.
Once the components are tightened securely, disassemble them again. Observe the flattened Flexigauge on the surface. Use the reference chart provided with the product to compare the width of the flattened material against the clearance ranges. This reading determines the exact clearance in the measured section.
Benefits and Limitations of Flexigauge
Flexigauge offers a simple and effective method for measuring internal clearances without the need for specialised tools. However, it is a single-use product, and inaccurate measurements may arise if surfaces were not clean or if torsional movement occurred during use. Proper care and preparation go a long way in ensuring accurate results.
