What does an air compressor do?

An air compressor is a machine that sucks in air, pressurises it in a metal holding tank and releases it to power air tools and air powered workshop equipment such as tyre inflators. When the holding air tanks is drained to a certain air pressure the electric or petrol motor resumes working and refills the holding tank.

When selecting an air compressor it is a good idea to understand the types of jobs and/or tools you will want to use. Smaller air compressors that comprise lower volume air tanks and smaller motors, are ideal for jobs like tyre inflation or running some air tools for short periods. Easy to store and relatively portable, these units would be sufficient for many smaller compressed air applications.

What are the different types of air compressors we have to offer?

Stocking -

  • Direct drive air compressors - These are generally small air compressors with 1 to 2.5 horsepower, and with tank capacity from 8 to 40 litres. These air compressors are a good solution to a suit a large variety of home and car maintenance jobs. They are relatively compact and portable but are noisy based on their direct drive compressor.
  • Belt drive air compressors - A belt drive compressor will be available to tackle the biggest compressed air jobs. Spray painting, sand blasting and high volume air tools such as die grinders will all require large volumes of air to work properly. Belt drive air compressors are available from 40 litre volume upwards and they come with higher horsepower motors to easily fill their tanks during operation. These units may be less portable but will be quieter, more durable and will offer a greater range of uses.
  • Portable air compressors / 12v tyre inflators - these are vital piece to pack before hitting the road on any trip as they are a compact unit and can be powered by your car battery. A 12v air compressor is designed to inflate your tyres when you are out trekking but they can also handle inflation of sports balls and bike tyres.
