Hose Fittings - Making the connection
Hoses cannot do a lot on their own without connectors, fittings, adaptors to plug into. Whether it is fuel, air, vacuum, coolant, water, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant or gas that is in the hose, the fittings are necessary to make connections simple and leak proof. It can be a straight through connector, a T connector, 90 degree elbow, a step up to a larger diameter or step down to a smaller one and even a plug or blank to seal off the hose, there are all different sorts available.
The same goes for threaded fittings which can be in metric or imperial sizes as well as BSP and NPT. Confusing, absolutely. Unless you know your threads it is always a good idea to take an example of either what you need or what you need it to screw into with you. Easier than bringing back the wrong fitting.
Most connectors are made from brass or alloy though plastic is becoming popular for certain things. There are a lot of clever quick connect ones on the market as well though they are usually more expensive. Same goes for the light weight alloy fittings used in motorsport. The weight saving between them and say a brass connector is considerable.
