Popular Questions Asked

What does a fuel pump do?

A fuel pump is a component of your car that transfers fuel from your vehicle's fuel tank to your carburettor or fuel injector. There are different types of fuel pumps depending on your vehicle, including mechanical and electrical fuel pumps.

What are the signs your fuel pump is failing?

Your vehicle cannot work without a functional fuel pump, if your fuel pump stops working altogether, you will not be able to start your car. If you notice any of the below symptoms, your fuel pump might be on its way out.

  • Difficulty starting - if your fuel pump cannot get enough fuel to your engine, you may have issues getting your car started. A common problem with worn fuel pumps is they lose pressure. Your vehicle cannot work without a functional fuel pump, therefore unable to push sufficient about of fuel to the engine.
  • Vehicle dying under pressure - if you push your vehicle to the limits, whether you are racing it, carrying extra weight or pushing it to the limits, your vehicle's power may cut off. This indicates your fuel pump cannot keep up with the demands of your vehicle.
  • Cannot start your engine - eventually, if you don't notice the above symptoms or your fuel pump goes without any warning, you will not be able to get your vehicle started as the fuel pump will not be able to pump the fuel to the motor.

Can I drive if my fuel pump is bad?

You can drive on a bad fuel pump, however, it is not recommended as you don't want to end up stranded somewhere when your fuel pump eventually decides to give way. If you notice any of the above symptoms, it is best to check the fuel pump and if faulty, get a replacement as soon as possible.
