Centre Bearing - Support for a Tailshaft
Centre bearings or the central support bearing are not found in all vehicles. It is only in the ones with rear wheel drive and usually in the long wheel base models. Like any rotating part, they are prone to wear out over time and will need to be replaced. It is usually not a difficult job, though being located under the vehicle, it will need to be raised so you can access it.
What does a Centre Bearing do?
All rear wheel drive cars have a tailshaft connecting the gearbox to the differential. Without it, you will go nowhere. In some cases, tailshafts can be very long or split into 2 separate units due to chassis clearance or the angle of the tailshaft. If the angle on a tailshaft is too great it will cause issues with universal joints. This is where a centre bearing is required. It supports the tail shaft or shafts. It is simply a bearing mounted to the chassis that allows the tail shaft running through it to smoothly rotate. Besides holding it up, it also helps minimise vibration and harmonics.
What are the symptoms of a worn Centre Bearing?
If the bearing itself is worn then noise or vibration or maybe both when driving. The faster you go the worse it may get. Will sound worse when accelerating. In a lot of cases the centre bearing is incased in a rubber support to absorb bumps. This can crack or fail which will cause clunking or banging especially in initial acceleration or deacceleration.
If your centre bearing is not what it used to be, Repco can find you a replacement and get you going. We also have the tools and lifting equipment to help in the removal/install process if you need them.
