Oil Pans - A Sump full of oil
Oil pans or sumps are the holding reservoir for engine oil. A simple dip stick is used to measure the level of oil in the reservoir. Situated on the bottom of the engine they catch all the oil after it has been pumped around the engine. The oil pump pick-up dips into this reservoir of oil so it can be sucked up, filtered and then pumped around the engine to where it is required. Once used, the oil falls back into the oil pan and the process repeats itself.
They come in all shapes and sizes and are made from stamped steel or diecast metal. They are bolted to the bottom of the engine block and use a gasket as a seal to stop oil leaking from them.
Do Oil Pans require maintenance?
In general, no, they don't. They have a drain plug which is used during an oil change to drain the old oil. These have a sealing washer on them to stop leaks. It is advisable to replace this washer every time you do an oil change. The only other thing is do not overfill them with too much oil during an oil change.
The only time they need replacing or repairing is accident damage or because they sit so low, hitting or running over an object on the road can damage them. The only other thing that can happen is a stripped sump plug bolt hole. A thread insert can fix that issue.
At Repco, we can find you a replacement sump and gasket set if required. As they are not a common replacement item, if we don�t have one we can advise you where you may be able to get one.
