Miscellaneous - Steps and Step Ladders
Steps and step ladders are an important part of any garage or workshop or even inside the home. They are the small children of the ladder world and are just as important as larger ladders. Most giant ladders are now virtually outlawed and have been replaced by scissor lifts or tower cranes due to safety concerns. There is really nothing wrong with a ladder if used correctly. Unfortunately statistics have proved this not to be the case.
Popular Questions Asked
Why do you need a Step or Step Ladder?
Steps and step ladders are a safe way to reach things that are too high up without fear of overbalancing or slipping and crashing to the ground. An upturned bucket or kitchen chair is not the ideal prop to use. They can break or topple over and in the worst case scenario leave you with a trip to the emergency department at your local hospital.
The most common use is to stack or store things you don't use very often up high so they are tucked out of the way. Xmas deco's or camping gear, even spare bedding is a good example of some of these things. Even the odd car part you want to keep because you may need it one day.
A step or step ladder lets you do this safely and gives you the ability to stack it properly so it won't fall off and break or damage something else in the process.
These days of large SUV's and 4x4's you need one just to wash the roof and windows or even to change the wiper blades.
What size step or step ladder do you need?
A lot depends on how high you are storing the items and how tall you are so it will vary. With steps and step ladders more steps is better than less. Ideally you want to easily see the shelf or top of the cupboard you are using as storage. This makes it easy to see and organise items. Also lifting them up and getting them down. You don't want to be reaching over your head, especially with heavy items.
If you want to get scientific you can take 3 measurements. The first from the floor to the height of the top shelf or top of the cupboard you are using as storage. The second is the height when standing from your feet to your neck. The third is the height of the top step of the ladder you are looking to buy, to the ground. When you add 2 & 3 together it should be close to or taller than 1.
Most good steps or step ladders have a wide base as the top step so it is stable when standing up there. They also have an extension you can hang on to so you won't easily overbalance.
