Face Masks and Respirators - Breathe Safely
Face masks and respirators are a safety item that should be taken seriously. Fumes, dust, gases, spray paint are not that visible in the air. You may smell them, though seeing them is almost impossible. That is where a face mask or respirator gives you that protection by filtering the air you are breathing and making it safe. Far better that than letting it into your lungs, as prolonged exposure can cause health issues.
Popular Questions Asked
What is the difference between a a respirator and a face mask?
Lets do the simply one first. A face mask simply masks your nose and mouth, though it is not an airtight seal so you can still get outside air in past the small gaps. This works ok in a room full of people all wearing masks but not if you are spray painting or working with harmful gases or fumes.
Face masks also filter the air you exhale so it works both ways. They are mostly disposable like the blue ones you get at medical centres. Ones made from cloth can be washed and reused.
A respirator is designed to have an airtight seal around your nose and mouth. It filters all incoming air through a set of replaceable filter elements. It does not filter any air you exhale. This is simply vented through a one way valve in the respirator.
Respirators have different filters available for your specific task. If welding, that may be different from sanding body filler or spray painting. Always check the filter type before purchase. Some cheaper respirators are completely disposable, though you find the airtight seal on these is not as good as a more expensive one. These are usually designed for dust only.
When do I need to use a full face respirator?
A full face respirator is a normal respirator with the addition of a clear plastic shield to protect your eyes. Some fumes and chemicals can cause eye irritation and in some cases you may want spray and splash protection. These respirators are designed to protect against that. Be aware - They do not automatically cater for people that wear prescriptive glasses. Some respirators suppliers offer a special kit for this.
