Understanding Universal Joints on the 2022 Mitsubishi ASX

When it comes to the 2022 Mitsubishi ASX, universal joints are not a relevant component in its drivetrain system. The reason behind this boils down to the design of the ASX's power transmission setup. Unlike traditional rear-wheel-drive vehicles or trucks which often rely on driveshafts requiring universal joints, the Mitsubishi ASX utilises a front-wheel-drive (FWD) layout as standard, with optional all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations that do not employ universal joints in the same way.

Universal joints, or U-joints as they are commonly called, are used primarily to connect the driveshaft to the transmission and differential in vehicles where a driveshaft spans a flexible connection between these components. This setup is typical in rear-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles with a longitudinally mounted engine. Since the standard ASX comes with a transverse engine setup powering the front wheels directly via axle shafts of constant velocity (CV) joints, traditional universal joints do not form a part of its drivetrain.

The AWD system in the 2022 Mitsubishi ASX is designed differently too. Instead of conventional driveshafts with U-joints, the ASX typically uses independent half-shafts with CV joints, which serve a similar but more advanced role compared to universal joints. CV joints allow smooth transmission of power at varying angles while maintaining constant velocity, which is important given the movement of the wheels with steering and suspension travel. These joints are better suited to the compact, transverse engine AWD layout the ASX features.

Because universal joints are not used, you won't find them in the regular maintenance or servicing schedules of a 2022 Mitsubishi ASX. Instead, attention is focused on the condition of the CV joints and their rubber boots, which protect them from dirt and moisture. Faulty or damaged CV boots can lead to joint failure, so inspecting and maintaining these parts is a key part of keeping your ASX's drivetrain in good shape.

To sum it up, universal joints have their place in specific drivetrain designs, but the architecture of the Mitsubishi ASX means they are not part of the package. The vehicle's front-wheel-drive setup and its AWD variant both operate without traditional U-joints, relying instead on CV joints to deliver efficient and reliable power transfer.
