2022 Ford Everest oxygen sensor — is it fitted and what’s the go?

For Australian and New Zealand–spec 2022 Ford Everest models (the outgoing UA-series with the 2.0L Bi‑Turbo or 3.2L TDCi diesels), a conventional oxygen sensor (also called an O2, lambda or HO2S sensor) isn’t used. Ford’s own technical documentation for Ranger/Everest MY2019–2022 outlines the exhaust monitors as NOx sensors (upstream and downstream of the SCR), multiple exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors, and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) differential pressure sensor—no HO2S is listed. Why doesn’t the 2022 Everest diesel need one? Unlike petrol engines, diesels don’t throttle intake air and generally run lean across the rev range. The engine control unit targets combustion using air mass (via the MAF), boost, injection timing and rail pressure, and manages emissions with EGR and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
