2021 Mitsubishi ASX transmission filter – is there one?
For the 2021 Mitsubishi ASX sold in Australia and New Zealand, a conventional, service-replaceable transmission filter is not fitted to the common CVT automatic (INVECS-III, transaxle codes F1CJC/F1CJA). The factory workshop documentation shows an internal oil strainer and pan magnets rather than a separate, routine-service filter. Mitsubishi’s service schedule for MY21 ASX lists CVT fluid inspections and replacement under specified conditions, but no transmission-filter change item. Jatco CVT technical information for the CVT8 family (used by Mitsubishi for ASX applications) likewise describes a built-in suction strainer and internal filtration that are not scheduled maintenance parts.
Technical sources referenced:
- Mitsubishi Motors Workshop Manual, ASX/RVR (2019–2021), Group 23A – CVT (F1CJC/F1CJA): shows internal oil strainer and pan magnets, no serviceable external filter.
- Mitsubishi Motors Australia Service and Warranty Booklet (MY21 ASX): CVT fluid inspection/replacement listed, no filter replacement line item.
- Jatco CVT8 (JF016E/JF011E family) technical descriptions: internal suction strainer and non-service filtration, with maintenance centred on correct CVT fluid and cooling.
Why there’s no separate transmission filter: the ASX’s CVT relies on a high-flow pump, precise hydraulic control and very clean, specification-correct CVT fluid. To avoid flow restriction and pressure drops, the unit is designed with an internal mesh strainer at the pickup and strong magnets in the sump to catch wear particles. Any finer filtration is integrated inside the transmission and only accessed during an overhaul, not during routine servicing. Some markets and models use an external cooler-line filter on certain CVTs, the 2021 ASX application does not list one as a service item.
Good maintenance still matters. Owners should:
- Use the correct fluid (Mitsubishi DiaQueen CVTF-J4 or the superseded equivalent specified for the VIN).
- Follow the service schedule in the vehicle’s Service and Warranty Booklet. Many workshops in AU/NZ will recommend fluid changes between 60,000–90,000 km for vehicles that tow, commute in heavy traffic, or see hot climates.
- Have the CVT inspected if there are symptoms like shuddering on take-off, flare or slip under load, droning/whine, or fluid that smells burnt or looks dark.
Note: Some markets offered a manual gearbox on lower trims, manual transmissions in the ASX do not use a transmission filter either, just oil that’s replaced at specified intervals.
Does the 2021 ASX have a serviceable transmission filter?
No. The CVT uses an internal strainer and magnets, and Mitsubishi does not specify a filter replacement during routine servicing. Maintenance focuses on correct CVT fluid and inspections.
When should the CVT fluid be changed on a 2021 ASX?
Follow the Service and Warranty Booklet for your VIN and usage. Many AU/NZ workshops suggest 60,000–90,000 km for vehicles used in hot, hilly or stop‑start conditions. Light-duty vehicles may go longer, but regular inspections are wise.
Can an external aftermarket transmission filter be added?
While some kits exist, adding a filter can affect flow and warranty. It’s best to consult a Mitsubishi dealer or CVT specialist before fitting any non-standard filtration or cooler hardware.
