2021 Mazda 3 universal-joints
Universal joints (the cross-and-bearing “U-joints” you see on rear-drive prop shafts) aren’t used in the driveline of the 2021 Mazda 3 sold in Australia and New Zealand. Technical sources for the BP-platform Mazda 3 list front-wheel drive only in these markets, with front drive shafts that use constant velocity (CV) joints. The Mazda BP Workshop Manual’s Front Drive Shaft section specifies outer and inner CV joints, and the Driveline/Axle layout shows no propeller shaft that would need U-joints. The Steering Column and Shaft section does show small universal joints in the steering intermediate shaft, but these aren’t part of the engine-to-wheel driveline and aren’t routine service items.
Why no driveline universal-joints? With a transverse engine and front-wheel drive, the Mazda 3 must transmit power while the front wheels steer and move through suspension travel. CV joints maintain constant angular velocity across large angles, preventing the speed fluctuations and shudder a traditional U-joint would introduce. Even in overseas AWD variants of the BP Mazda 3, the propeller shaft uses CV-type couplings for improved NVH, not the classic cross-type U-joints found on older rear-drive utes.
What owners should focus on instead is CV joint health. At regular servicing (typically every 10,000–15,000 kilometres with tyre rotations), have the front CV boots inspected for splits, hardening, or grease fling around the inner guards. Catching a torn boot early often means a simple reboot, leave it too long and grit will chew out the joint. Common symptoms include a rhythmic clicking on full lock (outer CV joint wear) or a shudder on take-off (often inner CV wear, but also check engine mounts and lower control arm bushes).
About the steering: the intermediate shaft does contain compact universal joints to link the column to the rack. These are typically sold as part of the shaft assembly, are not greasable, and aren’t a scheduled service item. If there’s notchiness, tight spots, or visible corrosion at the lower joint, a technician can assess free play and, if needed, replace the intermediate shaft assembly per the Mazda workshop procedure.

Popular questions
Does a 2021 Mazda 3 have universal-joints?
Not in the driveline. The BP Mazda 3 in Australia and New Zealand is front-wheel drive and uses CV joints on the front drive shafts. There is a small universal joint in the steering intermediate shaft, but it’s not a regular service item.
What should be serviced instead of universal-joints on a Mazda 3?
Have the front CV boots and joints checked at routine services. Look for split boots, grease leakage, or clicking on full lock. Addressing a damaged boot early can avoid the cost of a complete shaft replacement.
Can the steering universal-joint be replaced on a 2021 Mazda 3?
If the steering intermediate shaft joint develops play or corrosion, the usual fix is to replace the intermediate shaft assembly. It’s not designed for greasing and is typically not repaired separately.
