2020 Mazda BT-50 oxygen sensor — not fitted on AU/NZ-spec diesels
For the Australian and New Zealand–spec 2020 Mazda BT-50 with the 2.2L or 3.2L Duratorq common-rail diesel, an oxygen (O2/lambda) sensor isn’t used. Technical sources that map out the engine control and exhaust aftertreatment confirm this: the Mazda BT-50 Workshop Manual (UP/UR, 2011–2020) sensor lists, the Ford Ranger PX/PXII Workshop Manual sections for the shared Duratorq diesels (303-14C Fuel Charging and Controls, 309-00 Exhaust Aftertreatment), and the Mazda Electronic Parts Catalogue for 2018–2020 BT-50 all show DPF differential pressure and multiple exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors, but no oxygen/lambda sensor.
Why no oxygen sensor? Diesel combustion runs very lean across most conditions, so the ECU doesn’t chase a tight stoichiometric air–fuel ratio the way a petrol engine does. Instead, it manages fuelling and emissions using MAF/MAP, rail pressure, EGTs, EGR control, and the DPF’s differential pressure signal. That setup gives the diesel ute what it needs to control smoke, temperature, and regeneration without a conventional O2 sensor.
What’s actually on the exhaust of a 2020 BT-50 Duratorq diesel:
- Multiple EGT sensors (pre-turbo and around the DPF) to protect hardware and manage DPF regenerations
- A DPF differential pressure sensor and hoses to track soot load
- Temperature probes and related wiring looms for the aftertreatment system
Note for late-2020 builds: the next-generation BT-50 (Isuzu-based TF series, commonly sold as MY21) moved to the 3.0L Isuzu diesel with AdBlue SCR. That system relies on NOx sensors rather than a traditional oxygen/lambda sensor. So whether it’s the Duratorq or the later Isuzu platform, a classic O2 sensor still isn’t the part you’ll be replacing on a BT-50.
Servicing tips owners actually need: keep the air filter fresh, ensure the MAF is clean, use the correct low-SAPS oil, check the DPF pressure hoses for cracks or blockages, and let the ute complete its regenerations with regular longer runs. If a parts site lists an “oxygen sensor” for a 2020 BT-50, it’s usually a miscategorised EGT or NOx sensor—double-check the VIN and the connector style before ordering.

For AU/NZ Duratorq diesels, no. The factory sensor set covers MAF/MAP, multiple EGTs and a DPF differential pressure sensor, but no oxygen/lambda sensor.
