2020 Holden Commodore TX valve — what it does and when to sort it
Based on GM Service Information for the ZB Commodore (Opel/Vauxhall Insignia B platform) HVAC section, which includes a Refrigerant Expansion Valve Replacement procedure, and major OE/aftermarket catalogues (ACDelco GM Genuine Parts and Behr/Hella application listings for Insignia B/Commodore ZB), the 2020 Holden Commodore is fitted with a thermostatic expansion (TX) valve at the evaporator. So, a TX valve is relevant to this model.
The TX valve’s job is to meter refrigerant into the evaporator, matching flow to heat load so the evaporator runs cold without flooding the compressor with liquid. It senses outlet superheat and trims flow accordingly, which keeps cabin temps stable, protects the compressor, and improves efficiency. On the ZB Commodore’s block-style valve mounted at the evaporator inlet (firewall side), it works hand-in-hand with the variable-displacement compressor and the system’s receiver-drier/desiccant (integrated in the condenser on many GM designs).
There’s no scheduled maintenance for a TX valve, but it can become restricted by debris after a compressor failure, or leak at its seals. Typical clues it’s playing up include:
- Weak cooling at idle but better at cruise, or erratic vent temps
- Evaporator or suction line icing, or warm air with a frosty inlet
- High side pressure normal/low with unusually low suction, or vice versa
- Audible hiss/chatter near the firewall and poor demist performance
If replacement is needed, it’s a licensed tech job. The system must be recovered (no venting), the lines and TX valve removed, and new O-rings installed and lightly lubricated with the correct PAG oil. Refit the block valve to the specified torque from the workshop manual, evacuate to deep vacuum to boil off moisture, leak-test, and recharge precisely to the quantity on the under-bonnet label. The ZB may use R-134a or R-1234yf depending on market, always charge what the label states. When the system’s been open, replace the receiver-drier or condenser desiccant bag as applicable, and add the correct oil balance for any parts changed.
To help the TX valve live a long life, keep the cabin filter fresh, ensure the condenser is clean of leaves and bugs, and run the air-con regularly year-round to circulate oil and keep seals happy. If the system was contaminated by a compressor failure, insist on a thorough flush, inline filter where appropriate, and proper repair practices outlined in the Holden/GM service literature.
Popular questions
How do you tell if the TX valve on a 2020 Commodore is failing?
Look for poor cooling at idle, ice on the evaporator or suction line, temperature swings, and odd hissing by the firewall. Gauge readings that don’t make sense for ambient conditions (for example, very low suction with only modest high-side pressure) also point at a restricted or stuck TX valve. A licensed tech can confirm with pressure diagnostics and vent-temp checks.
Can a TX valve be cleaned, or should it be replaced?
It’s usually not worth “cleaning” a TX valve. If debris has made it sticky or blocked, replace it and address the root cause (often compressor wear or contamination). Fit new O-rings, flush the system where appropriate, and renew the drier/desiccant to keep moisture and particles from damaging the new valve.
Do you need to regas after replacing the TX valve?
Yes. The system must be evacuated and recharged with the exact refrigerant type and weight shown on the vehicle label. A simple top-up won’t cut it, an accurate charge is critical for proper superheat control and compressor longevity.
