2020 Ford Fiesta MAP sensor — what it does and how to look after it

Petrol EcoBoost variants use a manifold-mounted MAP and, on turbo models, a separate charge-pipe TMAP (pressure/temperature) sensor, diesel variants also employ a MAP for load and EGR control. So the MAP sensor is absolutely relevant to this model year Fiesta.
The MAP sensor’s job is to report the absolute pressure inside the intake manifold so the engine control unit can work out air mass, fuel delivery, ignition timing and boost targets. On the 1.0L EcoBoost, it pairs with the charge-pipe TMAP to track boost and intercooler drop, keeping the little turbo honest. A healthy MAP signal means smooth idle, tidy fuel economy and strong mid-range torque — exactly what owners expect under the bonnet.
It’s not a scheduled replacement item, but it does benefit from basic care. During regular servicing:
- Inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, bent pins or loose fit, reseat with a light touch of dielectric grease if advised by workshop practice.
- Check the sensor’s O-ring and mounting screw, a nicked seal or loose fit can cause unmetered air leaks.
- If oil mist or dust has built up on the sensing port, clean with electronics-safe MAP/MAF cleaner only. Don’t use harsh solvents or compressed air.
Typical scan-tool readings to sanity-check: with key-on/engine-off, MAP should match local barometric pressure (around 100 kPa at sea level). At hot idle, expect roughly 25–40 kPa on a healthy petrol engine. Under boost, turbo models can exceed 150 kPa depending on load. If the Fiesta is logging faults like P0106, P0107 or P0108, idling roughly, using more fuel than usual, or feeling flat on hills, the MAP circuit is worth a look.
Replacement is straightforward for most variants: remove the engine cover, unplug the connector, undo the retaining screw (Torx in many cases), withdraw the sensor, lightly oil a new O‑ring, refit and snug the screw (just firm — it’s a plastic housing). Clear codes, then take a short drive so the ECU can relearn. Most workshops in ANZ will allow 0.2–0.4 hr for the job. Always use quality parts that meet OE spec to keep the Fiesta’s engine management calibrated as intended.
