2018 Ford Focus camshaft sensor: what it does, where it lives, and when to swap it

Ford’s factory DTC coverage for this model also lists CMP-related faults (P0340–P0345), further confirming the sensor is fitted and monitored.
The camshaft sensor on a 2018 Ford Focus keeps the engine management spot on. It tracks camshaft position and timing so the ECU can fire injectors and spark precisely, and control the variable cam timing for smooth idle, solid torque and decent fuel economy. When it’s healthy, cold starts feel tidy and throttle response is crisp, when it’s not, expect rough running, hesitation, higher fuel use and the odd stall. The dash may light up with a Check Engine lamp and log codes like P0340/P0341. Because VCT relies on clean timing data, a flaky CMP can make the engine feel a bit all over the place.

Replacement is straightforward with basic hand tools. Locate the sensor on the end of the cylinder head (some engines have one on each cam). Disconnect the battery if you’re working close to live harnesses, unplug the connector, remove the retaining bolt, and ease out the sensor. Fit a new O‑ring, lightly oil it, seat the new unit, and tighten the bolt to around 8–10 Nm. Clear any codes, then let the engine idle to stabilise—many Focus variants will relearn trim and cam control quickly. If a new sensor doesn’t resolve timing codes, look for wiring issues, poor grounds, or VCT solenoid/mechanical phaser faults before throwing more parts at it.
