2017 Holden Commodore clutch-kit — what it does and when it matters
Per Holden’s VF Series II workshop manual and GM Global Service Information, the 2017 Holden Commodore was offered with both manual and automatic transmissions. Manual variants (such as many SV6 and SS/SS V Redline models) use a conventional hydraulic clutch system, while automatic variants (6L45/6L80) use a torque converter and do not have a clutch-kit. Holden’s Electronic Parts Catalogue also lists clutch assemblies only for the manual models. So, a clutch-kit is absolutely relevant for 2017 Commodore manuals, and not used on the autos.
On the manual cars, the clutch-kit’s job is simple but vital: smoothly connect and disconnect the engine from the gearbox so the driver can pull away cleanly and shift gears without drama. A typical kit for these cars includes a pressure plate, friction disc, release bearing (usually a concentric slave cylinder on these models), and often a pilot bearing and alignment tool. V8 manuals run a Tremec TR-6060 and commonly a dual-mass flywheel, while many V6 manuals use an Aisin AY6, exact spec should be confirmed by VIN.
When it’s time for service, the clutch gets treated as a wear item rather than a fixed-interval replacement. Tell-tales that a new kit may be due include slipping under load (revs climb but road speed doesn’t), a high engagement point, shudder on take-off, notchy shifts, or fluid weeping from the bellhousing area (pointing to a leaking concentric slave). Because the clutch shares fluid with the brake system, Holden’s schedule to replace brake/clutch fluid every 24 months is a smart baseline for local conditions.
- Always replace the release bearing/concentric slave with the clutch-kit.
- Inspect the flywheel. Dual-mass units must be measured for freeplay, replace if out of spec. Solid flywheels can sometimes be machined if within limits.
- Check rear main seal and gearbox input seal while you’re in there.
- Use the correct torque specs and fastener sequence from the service manual.
- Bed-in gently for 500–800 km: avoid hard launches and heavy towing.
If the car is automatic, a clutch-kit isn’t applicable because the drivetrain uses a torque converter. Slipping or harsh shifts on an auto point to transmission service or repair rather than clutch replacement.
How long does a clutch last on a 2017 Commodore?
Driving style is the big decider. Many owners see 80,000–180,000 kilometres. Lots of stop–start, hills, towing, or track days can shorten that. Regular fluid changes and not riding the clutch help it live a long life.
Do automatic 2017 Commodores have a clutch-kit?
No. Autos use a torque converter, so there’s no conventional clutch to replace. If an auto is slipping, look at transmission fluid condition, software updates, or internal repairs rather than a clutch-kit.
Should the flywheel be replaced with the clutch?
Often, yes—especially on V8 manuals with a dual-mass flywheel. If the DMF is out of spec for freeplay or shows heat damage, replace it. Some V6 setups may use a solid flywheel that can be machined if within limits. Confirm the correct approach by VIN and the workshop manual.
