On this Mondeo, the throttle-position-sensors live inside the electronic throttle body, reading the angle of the throttle plate so the powertrain control module can meter air, fuel, spark and emissions gear with precision. Petrol EcoBoost versions use the TPS constantly to deliver smooth response, cruise control and stable idle. Diesel models still use a throttle valve for EGR blending and clean shutdown, so the TPS is just as important for correct airflow management even though load is mainly set by fuel quantity.

Because the TPS is built into the throttle body, it isn’t a separate bolt-on item. If the sensor fails or the two internal tracks don’t agree, the car may light the MIL, drop into limp-home, surge at idle or hesitate on tip-in. Common fault codes include P0121–P0124 and P2135. A quick scan of live data should show TP1 and TP2 moving smoothly and correlating, if they spike or disagree, the throttle body is on the naughty list.

There’s no scheduled replacement interval for the Mondeo’s throttle-position-sensors. As part of routine servicing, a careful clean of the throttle body bore and plate every 60–100,000 kilometres can prevent sticky behaviour. Use throttle-body-safe cleaner, don’t force the plate by hand, and keep solvent out of the electronics. Check the connector and loom for corrosion or broken pins, especially if the car’s seen a lot of wet or coastal driving.

When replacement is needed, the fix is to fit a complete electronic throttle body and a new gasket. Torque it to spec, reconnect, clear codes, and perform an electronic throttle/idle relearn with a scan tool or prescribed drive cycle. Expect a smoother idle and more predictable throttle after relearn. If codes reference the pedal (APP) instead, test that component and its wiring before condemning the throttle body.
