2014 Toyota Land Cruiser fuel pump — what it does and when to service it

Based on Toyota workshop literature and parts catalogues for the 200 Series (2014 model year), every petrol and diesel Land Cruiser uses a fuel pump. Petrol variants run an in-tank electric pump module, while diesel variants use a Denso engine-driven high‑pressure supply pump for the common-rail system (with a hand primer and low-pressure feed/filtration ahead of it). So the fuel pump is absolutely relevant on a 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser.

The fuel pump’s job is simple but critical: move clean fuel from the tank to the engine at the right pressure and flow. In petrol Land Cruisers, the in-tank electric pump feeds the injectors via a regulator and filter. In diesel versions, the engine-driven supply pump pressurises the rail to extremely high levels for precise injection timing and atomisation. Either way, if the pump is tired or starved, performance drops and reliability goes out the window.

For routine servicing, it’s smart to treat the pump as part of the wider fuel system:

  • Change fuel filters on time — diesel owners especially. In Aussie and Kiwi conditions, shortening intervals is cheap insurance against pump wear from dirt or water.
  • Keep the tank above a quarter to help the in-tank petrol pump run cooler and quieter.
  • Use quality fuel from busy stations
