2010 Toyota Ractis universal joints — what’s fitted and what to service
Referencing Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalog and Repair Manual information for the Ractis platform (NCP100/NCP105, 2010 model year), universal joints are not part of the front-wheel-drive (2WD) driveline. Those models use constant velocity (CV) joints on the front drive shafts. However, the 4WD variant (commonly NCP105) carries a propeller shaft linking the transmission to the rear differential, and that shaft uses universal joints. Steering columns on all variants also use a small universal joint, but that’s separate from the driveline.
Why 2WD models don’t use driveline universal joints: front-drive layouts rely on CV joints because they maintain constant rotational speed at higher steering and suspension angles, which is critical for smooth, low-vibration power delivery to the front wheels. With no rear prop shaft on 2WD Ractis, there’s simply no place for a driveline U-joint to live.
For Ractis owners with the 4WD model, the universal joints on the propeller shaft do an unglamorous but vital job: they let the shaft change angle as the suspension moves, so power keeps flowing to the rear axle without binding. When these joints wear, they can cause a dull clonk on take-off, a vibration that rises with road speed, or a shudder under load. Left too long, a flogged U-joint can accelerate wear in the centre bearing and even stress the diff or transfer case.
There’s no set replacement interval from Toyota for these joints, instead, fold checks into routine servicing. A good workshop will:
- Inspect for play at each joint, looking for dry, reddish dust at the bearing caps, loose circlips, or sling marks from failing seals.
- Rotate the shaft by hand and feel for notchiness or tight spots.
- Check the centre support bearing and prop shaft balance if there’s a vibration between 60–100 km/h.
Many factory U-joints on small Toyota props are sealed-for-life and not greasable. If they’re loose, crunchy or leaking, replacement is the go. Where greasable aftermarket joints are fitted, a small pump of quality chassis grease at regular services (10,000–15,000 km) helps them last. After beach runs or creek crossings, add an extra inspection — water and grit are the sworn enemies of needle bearings.
When replacing, mark the prop shaft flanges so reassembly preserves original orientation, and use new hardware where specified. If a joint has failed badly, have the shaft checked for straightness and balance. Done properly, fresh U-joints restore that smooth, fuss-free feel the Ractis is known for on Kiwi and Aussie roads.
- Does a 2WD 2010 Toyota Ractis have universal joints in the driveline?
No. The 2WD Ractis uses CV joints on the front axles and has no rear propeller shaft, so there are no driveline U-joints. It does have a small steering column universal joint, which is unrelated to the driveline. - How long do 4WD Ractis universal joints typically last?
With easy city and highway use, many last well beyond 150,000 km. Frequent gravel, loads, or water exposure can shorten that. Vibration, clunks or rust dust at the caps are cues to inspect and replace. - Can the Ractis U-joints be greased?
Factory joints are typically sealed and not serviceable. If your vehicle has aftermarket greasable joints, give them a light grease at regular services. If a sealed joint shows play or roughness, replace it rather than trying to revive it.
