2010 Ford Ranger crank-angle sensor: purpose, service and replacement

The crank-angle sensor’s job is to keep the engine in sync. It reads the toothed wheel on the crankshaft and tells the PCM exactly where the crank is in its rotation. That timing data lets the computer fire injectors and spark (on petrol engines) at the right moment, manage idle quality, and protect the engine under load. When this little sensor goes out of whack, everything from starting to fuel economy can suffer.
It’s not a scheduled service item, but it’s wise to keep an eye on it as kilometres stack up. Common warnings include hard starting, intermittent stalling, uneven idle, sudden loss of power, or the tacho dropping to zero while cranking. A check engine light with codes like P0335/P0336 is a strong hint. Before throwing parts at it, check the basics: clean, tight connector, no oil contamination, loom not chafing on the block or engine mounts, and a healthy battery and starter speed.

- Locate the sensor (position varies by engine—often at the front timing cover or down near the bellhousing).
- Remove the retaining bolt, wiggle the sensor free, and compare the new unit to the old for depth and connector orientation.
- Lightly oil the O-ring, seat it squarely, torque the fastener to spec, and route the harness away from heat and moving parts.
After fitting, clear any codes and start the ute. Most 2010 Rangers don’t need a special crank learn, the PCM will sort itself after a short run. If idle behaviour is odd, a KAM (Keep Alive Memory) reset or a few drive cycles usually tidies it up.
Quality matters here—stick with reputable OE or OE-equivalent sensors. If the sensor failed due to metal debris on the tip, also inspect the crank reluctor teeth and consider an oil change. For diesels that work hard off-road, a quick look at the sensor connector and harness during routine servicing can save headaches down the track.
Where is the crank-angle sensor on a 2010 Ford Ranger?
Location depends on the engine. On many 3.0 TDCi diesels it’s at the front of the engine near the crank pulley or timing cover, some petrol variants place it near the front cover as well. The 4.0 V6 can mount by the transmission bellhousing reading the flywheel.
Access can be tight. A torch and a small 10 mm socket usually do the trick. If unsure, check the engine ID plate and match it to a workshop diagram for exact placement.
What are the signs the crank-angle sensor is failing?
Typical symptoms include long crank/no start, random stalling, rough idle, poor fuel economy, or the tacho not moving while cranking. The check engine light may log P0335/P0336.
Because similar symptoms can come from wiring faults or a weak battery, it’s smart to scan for codes and inspect the loom and connector before replacing the sensor.
Does a 2010 Ranger need a relearn after sensor replacement?
