Universal Joints on the 2009 Subaru Impreza: Are They Used and What You Need to Know

The 2009 Subaru Impreza does not actually utilise universal joints in its drivetrain. Instead, it uses constant velocity (CV) joints as a key part of the front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive system. This is a common setup for many modern passenger vehicles, especially those with independent front suspensions and front-wheel or all-wheel-drive configurations. So why are universal joints not relevant for the 2009 Subaru Impreza?

Universal joints, often called U-joints, are typically found in rear-wheel-drive vehicles with a solid rear axle or in drivetrain setups that use a driveshaft to transfer power from the transmission to the rear differential. The design of a U-joint allows the driveshaft to flex and transmit torque even when the angles between the components change due to suspension movement or chassis articulation.

The 2009 Subaru Impreza, however, employs a transverse engine layout with a front-mounted gearbox that directs power to the wheels through front half-shafts fitted with CV joints. These CV joints are what allow the transmission of power smoothly at varying angles, essential given the steering and suspension movement of the front wheels. The Impreza's all-wheel-drive system includes a centre differential and rear driveshaft components with CV joints as well.

Because the Impreza's drivetrain does not rely on a long, straight driveshaft with universal joints, U-joints simply are not fitted or required. The CV joints cover the role of allowing angular movement while keeping the power delivery smooth and continuous. Additionally, the nature of Subaru's all
