2008 Nissan Navara throttle-position-sensor (TPS)
Based on the 2008 Navara (D40) factory service manual (EC – Engine Control and ACC – Accelerator sections) and Nissan CONSULT-III data stream references, the 2008 Nissan Navara does use throttle-position sensing. On VQ40DE petrol models it’s built into the electronic throttle body as dual-track sensors. On YD25DDTi diesel models there’s an electronically actuated intake air/throttle valve with an integrated position sensor, plus a separate accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor. The diesel’s throttle valve is mainly for EGR control and smooth engine shut-down, but the position sensing is still critical to engine management.
For owners, that means the TPS is absolutely relevant on a 2008 Navara. Its job is to tell the engine control module exactly where the throttle plate is, so fueling, ignition (petrol) and EGR/airflow strategies (diesel) stay on song. When the TPS signal goes out of range or becomes noisy, the ute can feel flat, surge, idle roughly, or jump into limp mode. - Check live data with a scan tool. You’re looking for smooth, matching percentage tracks and no sudden drops or spikes as the pedal is moved.
- After cleaning or replacement, perform Nissan’s relearns: Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning and Idle Air Volume Learning. A proper scan tool speeds this up.
- Inspect connectors and grounds. High resistance or moisture can mimic a bad sensor.
Replacement tips: disconnect the battery, depressurise intake as needed, and avoid forcing the throttle plate by hand. On petrol models, the electronic throttle body usually comes as one unit, on diesels, the intake air control/throttle valve assembly is similar. Use new gaskets, don’t overtighten fasteners, and follow torque specs from the D40 service manual. A brief road test and a data check after relearn will confirm it’s behaving. With clean airways, solid wiring, and correct relearns, a Navara’s TPS setup will happily clock the kays without drama.
