2006 Toyota Highlander oil pump — what it does and when to service it

Based on Toyota’s Factory Service Manual for the 2006 Highlander (covering the 2AZ‑FE 2.4‑litre and 3MZ‑FE 3.3‑litre engines, including the Hybrid) and Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue, an engine oil pump is absolutely fitted to this model. Aisin’s OE parts listings also identify complete oil pump assemblies for both engines. So yes, the oil pump is relevant and used on every 2006 Toyota Highlander.

The oil pump’s job is straightforward but critical: it draws oil from the sump, pressurises it, and sends it through the engine’s galleries to lubricate crank and cam bearings, feed the valvetrain, and supply VVT‑i control. On the Highlander’s engines it’s a chain‑driven pump mounted behind the front (timing) cover. Without a healthy pump and the right oil, metal‑to‑metal contact, overheating of bearings, and rapid engine damage can follow.

For everyday servicing, the best way to “look after” the oil pump is to look after the oiling system as a whole:

  • Use the correct grade (typically 5W‑30 to Toyota spec) and change oil and filter every 10,000 km or 6 months in AU/NZ conditions, or sooner in severe use.
  • Choose quality filters with proper anti‑drainback valves to help prevent dry starts.
  • Fix leaks quickly and keep the pickup area clean, sludge is an oil pump’s worst enemy.

Oil pumps aren’t a routine replacement item, but there are times to inspect or replace one:

  • Low oil pressure warning, rattly starts, lifter/timing noise, or knocking after warm‑up.
  • Verified low pressure on a mechanical gauge (don’t rely on the dash light alone).
  • Heavy sludge history or metal in the oil.
  • Front cover/timing work on high‑kilometre vehicles, when access is already open.

If replacement is on the cards, go for a genuine or OE‑quality (Aisin) pump. Always renew the pickup O‑ring and any related seals, clean or replace the pickup screen, and prime the new pump with clean oil before refitting. Use the correct sealant on the front cover, torque fasteners to spec, and confirm oil pressure with a gauge on first start. For the Hybrid V6, despite the electrified drivetrain, the petrol engine still relies on a conventional, chain‑driven oil pump just like the non‑hybrid.

Does the 2006 Toyota Highlander have an oil pump?

Yes. Every 2006 Highlander—2.4‑litre four‑cylinder, 3.3‑litre V6, and the Hybrid—uses a chain‑driven engine oil pump behind the timing cover to circulate oil for lubrication and VVT‑i operation.

When should the oil pump be replaced on a 2006 Highlander?

There’s no fixed interval. Replace it if there’s verified low oil pressure, internal wear/noise, sludge damage, or when the timing/front cover is off at high kilometres. Always confirm with a mechanical pressure test before condemning the pump.

How can they protect the oil pump’s health?

Stick with the right 5W‑30 spec oil, change oil and filter every 10,000 km or 6 months, use quality filters, keep leaks in check, and ensure the pickup screen stays clear. If the pump is replaced, prime it and renew the pickup O‑ring and seals.
