Threadlocker is a product used to seal and lock fastener threads together to prevent accidental loosening over time as a result of vibration from the road, engine vibration, rotating energy or other situations which can cause nuts and bolts to loosen or even be lost from assemblies without warning. Threadlocker works like a glue which adheres to both male and female threads when inserting the fastener, once dry the threadlocker forms a vibration-resistant bond which will hold the fastener in place even when exposed to constant, extreme vibration. All Loctite products offer a full cure time of 24 hours and have a broad temperature resistance of -50 to 150 degrees Celsius. Choosing the correct threadlocker for the task is an important thing to consider during assembly. See below for a simple guide on selecting the correct Loctite for the job:
- Purple Loctite - Also known as Loctite 222, purple Loctite is a low-strength threadlocker which is best suited for use on low-strength metals such as aluminium and brass.
- Blue Loctite - A medium strength thread-locker available in liquid or semi-sold forms, this threadlocker offers medium strength properties but fasteners can still be removed with hand tools when required.
- Red Loctite - The highest strength Loctite threadlocker. Red Loctite is so powerful that fasteners will require heat in order to be removed and even then may still require power tools to get the job done. This is recommended for assemblies which do not need to be taken apart or removed.
Without the use of Loctite, fasteners can easily back out, loosen or even fall away completely without the driver noticing immediately. This can happen on vital steering or suspension components and can compromise your car's handling potentially resulting in accidents. It can also happen on internal engine components if you have rebuilt your motor without the use of the correct threadlocker. This can cause expensive, terminal damage to your engine and leave you stranded on the side of the road. It can also affect transmission internals, driveshaft components and pretty much any other fastener on your car.
