2006 Toyota Avensis camshaft sensor — what it does and how to look after it

What the sensor actually does is simple but critical. It watches a trigger on the camshaft and sends a clean on/off pulse to the ECU so the system knows exactly which stroke each cylinder is on. On the petrol VVT‑i engines this allows accurate spark timing and cam advance control, and on the D‑4D diesels it synchronises the common‑rail injection events and helps cut cranking time. When it goes out of spec, the ECU can’t trust the cam signal, so it reverts to a backup strategy using the crank sensor, which usually means hard starting, rough idle, flat spots, or limp mode.
There’s no scheduled replacement for the cam sensor, it’s a solid‑state Hall/inductive unit designed to last the life of the vehicle. As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to:
- Scan for stored or pending DTCs such as P0340/P0341/P0343 and check freeze‑frame data.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion, oil wicking in the loom, or a loose fit.
- Look for oil leaks from the rocker cover that can contaminate the sensor or its O‑ring.
- Confirm clean signal with a scope if diagnosing intermittent stalls or long crank.
Replacement is straightforward on the Avensis: it’s mounted at the end of the cylinder head near the timing end (intake side on most petrols, forward/upper area on the AD‑series diesels). After disconnecting the battery, unplug the connector, remove the retaining bolt, ease the sensor out without levering on the plastic body, and swap the O‑ring if it’s flattened or brittle. Refit with the correct torque as per the Toyota manual, reconnect, clear codes, and verify with a warm restart and a short road test. A genuine or quality OE‑equivalent sensor is worth it — cheap copies can cause erratic signals. If faults persist, check the reluctor/trigger wheel alignment and the crank sensor, as Toyota’s diagnostics note these systems work as a pair.

It’s fixed to the cylinder head at the timing chain/belt end. On the 1ZZ‑FE/1AZ/2AZ petrols it’s typically on the intake side near the front cover.
