2004 Toyota RAV4 universal joints: what’s fitted and how to look after them

Checking the driveline layout is key. Technical references such as the Toyota Repair Manual for the 2001–2005 RAV4 (Propeller Shaft section), Toyota’s Electronic Parts Catalogue, and general service guides like the Haynes RAV4 manual confirm: a 2004 RAV4 with AWD (often badged “4WD”) uses a propeller shaft running to the rear differential, and that shaft is fitted with universal joints (U‑joints) and a centre support bearing. A 2004 RAV4 that’s 2WD (front‑wheel drive) doesn’t have a prop shaft at all, so it doesn’t use U‑joints—its front drive shafts use constant‑velocity (CV) joints instead.

If the vehicle is 2WD/FWD: universal joints aren’t used because the drivetrain is transverse and only drives the front wheels. Power is sent through two front half‑shafts with CV joints, which allow smooth power delivery at steering angles. With no rear drive, there’s no propeller shaft, so U‑joints simply aren’t part of the package.

If the vehicle is AWD/4WD: U‑joints are fitted to the prop shaft and they earn their keep by allowing the shaft to transmit drive at slight operating angles between the transfer case and the rear diff. That flexibility caters for body movement under load and suspension travel, keeping everything smooth and tidy.

For owners, the purpose of the RAV4’s U‑joints is simple: maintain a steady, vibration‑free link to the rear wheels. Factory joints are typically sealed and not greasable, so they’re more “inspect and replace” than “lube and carry on.” During regular servicing—say, every 10,000–15,000 kilometres—it’s smart to check for red flags:

  • Clunk on take‑off or selecting Drive/Reverse
  • Shudder under load or vibration at 60–100 km/h
  • Visible play at the prop shaft yokes or rusty dust around the cups

If any of that shows up, a driveline specialist can measure play and confirm the culprit. On many 2004 RAV4s the OEM U‑joints are staked or otherwise non‑serviceable, so Toyota supplies the propeller shaft as an assembly. That said, plenty of Aussie and Kiwi driveline shops can rebuild the shaft with quality, greasable aftermarket joints and a fresh centre bearing, which can sharpen longevity and make future lubrication easy.

When replacing, ensure the shaft is phased correctly, flange bolts are tightened to Toyota spec, and the centre support bearing is aligned to avoid preload. After installation, a quick road test for vibe under light throttle at suburban and highway speeds seals the deal. Look after the U‑joints and that RAV4 AWD driveline will stay quiet, tight, and happy.

Do all 2004 RAV4s have universal joints?

No. Only AWD/4WD models have a propeller shaft with U‑joints. 2WD (front‑wheel drive) models use CV joints on the front drive shafts and don’t have U‑joints at all.

What are the common symptoms of worn U‑joints on a 2004 RAV4 AWD?

Owners usually notice a clunk when taking off, a driveline shudder, or a speed‑related vibration around 60–100 km/h. On inspection there may be play at the yokes or reddish dust around the bearing caps.

Can the RAV4’s U‑joints be greased or upgraded?

Factory joints are typically sealed with no grease nipples. Many local driveline shops can rebuild the prop shaft with quality greasable U‑joints and replace the centre bearing, which helps future servicing and durability.
