Early 1998 EL Falcons use a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor as part of a speed‑density system. From September 1998, the AU Falcon switches to a Mass Air Flow (MAF) system and does not use a MAP sensor for load sensing.
For EL builds (early 1998), the MAP sensor is a key player. It measures absolute pressure in the intake manifold so the ECU can work out engine load. Alongside RPM, intake air temp, coolant temp and oxygen sensor feedback, MAP data helps the Falcon meter fuel and set ignition timing across Aussie and Kiwi driving conditions—idling in summer heat, towing up hills, or cruising the motorway. Because the EL runs EEC‑V in a speed‑density strategy, accurate manifold pressure is crucial for sharp throttle response, steady idle and decent fuel economy.

- Inspect the small vacuum hose from the manifold to the sensor for splits, oil contamination or kinks. Replace any tired hose—vacuum leaks will skew readings.
- Ensure the sensor port isn’t gummed up with oil mist. If needed, a light shot of electronics‑safe cleaner on the port (not flooding the electronics) is fine.
- Electrical check: with the key on, most units have a 5 V reference, earth, and a signal that sits roughly around 1–1.5 V at idle and rises towards 4–4.5 V under load. A scan tool or multimeter makes this easy.
- Common fault clues include rough idle, flat spots, higher than usual fuel use, and DTCs like P0106–P0108. If testing confirms a dud, fit a quality replacement sensor.
When replacing, disconnect the battery, swap the unit (they’re usually mounted on the firewall or inner guard with a single plug and hose), and nip the screws up gently. After refitting, clear codes and let the ECU relearn: a short idle period with accessories off, then a steady drive cycle. As part of regular servicing, a quick inspection every 40–60,000 km keeps the system sweet, especially if the PCV system breathes a bit of oil vapour.
For late‑1998 AU Falcons, a traditional MAP sensor isn’t used for load sensing. Ford moved to a hot‑film MAF in the intake duct, which measures actual air mass for improved emissions control and driveability. Barometric pressure is handled separately within the EEC‑V system, so there’s no manifold‑referenced MAP sensor on standard AU petrol models.
