Engine Oil Maintenance for Your 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero

Keeping your 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero running smoothly requires regular maintenance and attention, particularly when it comes to engine oil. The right engine oil is crucial for maintaining the engine's performance, preventing wear, and ensuring longevity. If you're unsure about the specific requirements, consulting your owner's manual is always a wise first step, however, here's a general guide to help you out.

For your Pajero, a good quality conventional or synthetic oil with the right viscosity rating is essential. The engine type and driving conditions are crucial when selecting engine oil. Generally, a 10W-30 or 15W-40 is recommended for moderate climates, but you'll want to adjust based on any extremes in temperature or specific driving habits.

Regular oil change intervals are key to ensuring your Pajero's engine remains in tip-top shape. Typically, it's a good idea to change the engine oil every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometres, depending on usage patterns and the type of oil used. Synthetic oils might offer longer intervals between changes, but it's always best to check your specific oil's recommendations.

  • Warm Up the Engine: Before starting, ensure your vehicle has been driven for a few minutes to warm the oil, allowing it to flow more freely. This helps in draining it completely.
  • Safety First: Make sure the vehicle is parked on a level surface. Engage the handbrake and use wheel chocks for added safety.
  • Get the Right Tools: Gather a wrench set, an oil filter wrench, and an oil catch pan. You'll also need a new oil filter and the appropriate amount of fresh oil.

To change the oil, first, remove the oil cap to allow air into the system, then place the oil catch pan under the drain plug. Carefully remove the plug with a wrench and let the old oil fully drain out. Replace the oil filter using the filter wrench, and make sure to lubricate the rubber seal on the new filter before installing it. Tighten it by hand, then slightly more with the wrench without over-tightening.

Once the old oil is fully drained, replace the drain plug securely. Now, pour new oil into the engine. Be sure not to overfill, check the dipstick to ensure the oil level is correct. After you're done, run the engine for a couple of minutes and then check again for any leaks around the drain plug and filter area.

Dispose of the old oil and filter properly, recycling them according to local regulations. Keeping up with regular maintenance and ensuring you use the proper oil type and grade will help your 1989 Mitsubishi Pajero remain as reliable as it was designed to be. Happy driving!
