2025 Mitsubishi Triton CV Joint – Fitment, purpose and service advice

Referencing technical sources including the Mitsubishi Motors Australia MY25 Triton specification details (Super Select 4WD-II with a driven front axle) and the 2024–on Triton/L200 workshop manual front axle section (which specifies front drive shafts with inner and outer CV joints), CV joints are fitted to 2025 Triton 4x4 variants. On 2WD Triton models there’s no driven front axle, so no front CV joints are used, the tailshaft employs universal joints instead.

On 4x4 Tritons, the CV joint (constant velocity joint) sits at each end of the front half-shafts – a plunging inner joint to cope with suspension travel and a Rzeppa-style outer joint to deliver smooth power while steering. Their job is to send torque to the front wheels at a constant speed without vibration, regardless of steering angle or suspension movement. That’s vital off-road and on-road, keeping the ute composed over corrugations, ruts and tight turns.

As part of regular servicing, CV joints and boots deserve a quick look, especially if the Triton sees beach runs, creek crossings or heavy worksites. A torn boot lets water and grit in and flings grease out, which quickly chews a joint.

  • Tell-tale signs: clicking or clacking on full lock, shudder under load, vibration on acceleration, grease splatter around the inside of the wheel or control arms, or a visibly split boot.
  • Inspection tips: at each service interval (or ~10–15,000 km), check both inner and outer boots for cracks, hardening, clips loosening and grease leaks. After off-roading, recheck once the vehicle’s cleaned.
  • Replacement guidance: if a boot is torn but the joint’s quiet and free of notchiness, a boot kit and fresh high-moly CV grease can save the joint. If noise or play is present, replace the affected joint or, more commonly, the complete shaft for reliability. Use new clips and the specified single-use axle nut, and torque to the workshop manual spec. A wheel alignment check after front-end work is good practice.
  • Longevity: quality CVs last a long time if the boots stay intact. Genuine or OE-equivalent shafts are recommended for hard touring and towing.

For 2WD Triton owners: because there’s no front drive axle, CV joints aren’t part of your front-end. Focus instead on control arm bushes, ball joints and the tailshaft U-joints as your driveline wear items.

  • Does the 2025 Triton use CV joints?
Yes on 4x4 models – they have front half-shafts with inner and outer CV joints as detailed in the Triton/L200 front axle service procedures and the Super Select 4WD-II driveline specs. 2WD models don’t have front CV joints because the front wheels aren’t driven.
  • How long do the CV joints last on a 2025 Triton?
With intact boots and clean grease, many will run well past typical warranty kilometres. Harsh off-road use, lifted suspension, or torn boots accelerate wear. Regular inspection and quick boot repairs dramatically extend life.
  • Can the CV joint be replaced, or is a full shaft swap better?
Both are possible. If the joint is noisy or worn, a complete shaft is often the most time-efficient and reliable fix. If only the boot is damaged and the joint is still smooth, a boot-and-grease service is a cost-effective option.
