2022 Subaru XV head gasket — what it does and when to replace it

Based on Subaru technical references — including the FB20/FB20D Engine Service Manual, the GT-series Subaru XV (2021–2022) Workshop Manual, and the Subaru Genuine Parts Catalogue — the 2022 Subaru XV uses a head gasket. The FB-series 2.0‑litre horizontally opposed petrol engine has aluminium cylinder heads on an aluminium block with a multi‑layer steel (MLS) head gasket between them. Because it’s a boxer, there are two heads and therefore two head gaskets, one per bank.

In this XV, the head gasket’s job is to seal the combustion chambers while keeping the engine’s oil and coolant passages separated and leak‑free. It maintains compression, protects against cross‑contamination, and helps the engine run smoothly and efficiently. MLS construction gives reliable clamping and heat‑cycle durability when the proper torque‑to‑yield head bolts and tightening sequence (as specified in Subaru service literature) are used.

A head gasket isn’t a scheduled maintenance item
