2022 Subaru Impreza transmission-filter: is it fitted or needed?
For the 2022 Subaru Impreza, a replaceable transmission-filter isn’t a thing. The model is sold with either the TR580 Lineartronic CVT or a 5‑speed manual. According to Subaru’s factory Service Manual for MY2017–2022 Impreza (TR580 CVT section) and the Subaru Warranty & Maintenance Booklet for this model year, there’s no scheduled service operation to replace a transmission-filter, and there’s no external, user-replaceable filter on the CVT. Manual-transmission variants don’t use a transmission filter at all.
Subaru’s CVT is designed with internal filtration that’s not part of routine servicing. Inside the transmission case there’s a fine metal screen/strainer and an internal high-pressure filter to protect the hydraulic circuits. These components are classed as non-service items unless the unit is being repaired or overhauled. Subaru’s service procedures on TechInfo for CVT fluid changes specify fluid level/condition checks and gasket/seal replacement, but make no call to replace a transmission-filter.
Why they set it up this way comes down to reliability engineering and packaging. The TR580 uses controlled fluid flow, internal magnets and screens to trap wear particles, and stable, high-spec CVT fluid. That lets Subaru delete an external spin-on filter and keep maintenance simple. If a filter ever needs attention, it’s generally because the transmission has been contaminated (for example after an internal failure) and is already coming apart for repair.
- There’s no external or routine-service transmission-filter on the 2022 Impreza CVT.
- Internal filters/strainers are only addressed during transmission repair/overhaul.
- Manual models have no transmission filter, servicing is limited to gear oil changes.
Owners should stick to the maintenance schedule in the Owner’s Manual/Warranty & Maintenance Booklet: check CVT fluid condition and replace fluid at the prescribed intervals or sooner if driving in severe conditions (frequent stop‑start, steep hills, towing, hot climates). If shifting quality changes, fluid looks burnt, or metal debris is found on the drain plug magnet, a qualified Subaru technician should inspect the CVT. Only in cases of internal damage or contamination would the internal filter/strainer be replaced, as that requires transmission disassembly.

FAQs
Does the 2022 Subaru Impreza have a serviceable transmission-filter?
It doesn’t. The CVT uses internal, non-routine filters/strainers and there’s no spin‑on or external filter to replace during normal servicing. Manual models don’t use a transmission filter.
When should the CVT fluid be changed on a 2022 Impreza in Australia or New Zealand?
Follow the intervals in the Owner’s Manual/Warranty & Maintenance Booklet for your usage. Normal driving may have longer intervals, while severe service (heavy traffic, hills, towing, high heat) can bring earlier changes. A Subaru dealer can verify the correct schedule for your VIN and conditions.
Can an aftermarket inline transmission filter be added to the Impreza’s CVT?
It’s not recommended. Subaru’s design and service information don’t support add-on filters, and modifications can affect fluid pressure/flow and warranty. If contamination is suspected, the proper remedy is fluid service and professional inspection per Subaru procedures.
