2022 Mazda CX-5 ignition coils: what they do and when to replace them

Ignition coils are relevant to the 2022 Mazda CX-5 petrol range and not used on the diesel. Mazda’s KF-series Workshop Manual (2022, Ignition System – SKYACTIV-G) and the Mazda electronic parts catalogue list individual coil-on-plug units for the 2.0L, 2.5L and 2.5T SKYACTIV-G engines. The SKYACTIV-D 2.2L diesel, by design, uses compression ignition and therefore has no ignition coils.

On petrol CX-5s, each cylinder has its own coil-on-plug unit. The coil steps up the 12V battery supply to a high voltage and fires the spark plug precisely when the engine control module commands it. This direct, coil-on-plug layout improves spark energy, reduces losses through leads, and helps with clean starts, smooth idle and good fuel economy.

There’s no fixed replacement interval for ignition coils on the 2022 CX-5, they’re generally replaced on condition. During scheduled servicing—especially at the spark plug change—techs should inspect the coils and boots for cracks, heat hardening, oil contamination from rocker cover seals and carbon tracking. Scanning for misfire counters and fault codes (such as P0300–P0304) is a smart move, and the classic coil swap test can help confirm a suspect unit.

If boots are brittle, replace the boots or the complete coil. Avoid pressure-washing the engine bay, water in the plug tubes can take coils out quickly.

Stick with quality OE-spec coils (Mazda/DENSO) for consistent dwell control and durability, particularly on the 2.5T where higher cylinder pressures work coils harder. If the vehicle has done high kilometres and is in for spark plugs, some owners choose to pre-emptively replace all coils to avoid future downtime, but many will simply replace the one that’s failed and keep driving—both approaches are fine when guided by diagnostic results and the vehicle’s service history.

Do all 2022 Mazda CX-5 models have ignition coils?
