2022 Mazda 3 fuel filter — what’s fitted and what actually needs servicing
For the 2022 Mazda 3 sold in Australia and New Zealand with petrol Skyactiv-G engines, there isn’t a separate, serviceable fuel filter. Technical references for the BP-series Mazda 3 show the filter is integrated inside the in-tank fuel pump module and is considered maintenance-free. This setup is noted in the Mazda3 (BP) Workshop Manual under the Fuel Pump Unit section, and the Mazda Australia scheduled maintenance for petrol models doesn’t list a fuel filter replacement. Parts catalogues for BP petrol variants likewise don’t show a stand-alone canister or inline filter.
Why no separate filter? Modern Mazda fuel systems place a fine filter and a strainer (sock) inside the tank, upstream of the high-pressure pump. By filtering fuel before it ever reaches the engine bay, contamination risk is reduced, evaporative emissions are better managed, and the system needs fewer external connections. With clean ANZ fuel standards and returnless designs, the integrated filter typically lasts the life of the pump. If filtration becomes restricted, the fix is to replace the pump module as an assembly rather than swapping a cartridge.
What does that mean for servicing? For petrol 2022 Mazda 3 models, there’s no scheduled fuel-filter change. Sensible care is still worth it:
- Use quality, clean petrol from reputable servos.
- Avoid consistently running the tank right down to near-empty, the pump relies on fuel for cooling and the strainer can pick up more sediment when low.
- If symptoms like long cranking, hesitation under load, noisy pump, or low fuel pressure codes pop up, a technician will test pressure and, if needed, replace the pump module (which contains the filter).
Note for diesel variants: Where a 2022 Mazda 3 is fitted with a Skyactiv-D engine (market-dependent), there is a serviceable diesel fuel filter in the engine bay, typically replaced at regular intervals (around 40,000 km is common in Mazda diesel schedules) and monitored for water contamination. That’s a different setup to the petrol car.
Technical sources referenced: Mazda3 (BP) Workshop Manual — Fuel Pump Unit and Fuel System descriptions, Mazda Australia scheduled maintenance for 2022 Mazda 3 (petrol) showing no periodic fuel-filter item, Mazda electronic parts catalogues for BP petrol models listing the fuel filter as part of the in-tank pump module.
- Does a 2022 Mazda 3 have a fuel filter that needs changing?
For petrol models, no. The filter is built into the in-tank fuel pump and isn’t a separate service item. Diesel variants (where offered) do have a replaceable filter element. - Where is the fuel filter on a 2022 Mazda 3?
Petrol models: inside the fuel tank as part of the pump module. Diesel models: in the engine bay as a canister-style filter assembly with water detection. - When should the fuel filter be replaced on a 2022 Mazda 3?
Petrol: there’s no scheduled interval, the pump module (with integrated filter) is replaced only if diagnostics show a fault. Diesel: follow the logbook interval, commonly about every 40,000 km, or sooner if contaminated fuel is suspected.
