2022 Ford Transit tail-lights: purpose, care and replacements
Based on the Ford 2022 Transit Owner’s Manual (Lighting), Ford Workshop Manual section 417-01 (Exterior Lighting), and Australian Design Rules for lighting installation (ADR 13/00, aligned with UNECE R48 and R7), tail-lights are standard and essential on the 2022 Ford Transit. They form part of the rear combination lamp assembly and are required for roadworthy and Warrant of Fitness (WoF) compliance in Australia and New Zealand.
On the Transit, tail-lights do the obvious job: make the van visible from behind in low light and poor weather, showing width and position to following traffic. They share housing with stop lamps, indicators and reflectors, and they’re designed so the red rear position lamps don’t dazzle but stay visible at distance. The system is managed by the body control module (BCM), which monitors lamp circuits for failures and keeps everything ADR-compliant.
Depending on variant and market spec, the 2022 Transit may use conventional replaceable bulbs or LED lamp assemblies. Either way, looking after them is simple and worth doing as part of routine servicing.
- Function check: With park lights on, confirm both rear lamps glow evenly. Press the brake, check indicators and hazards. Don’t forget the number plate lamps.
- Lens and sealing: Inspect for cracks, chips, fading or moisture. Water ingress shortens bulb and LED life, replace seals or the lamp if there’s persistent condensation.
- Electrical: If one side is out, check the bulb (on bulb-equipped models) and the connector. If both sides are out, check relevant fuses and the trailer module if fitted.
- Bulb replacement: Match the correct type and wattage noted on the lamp or in the owner’s manual. Handle glass with a clean cloth, and refit the holder with a snug, weather-tight seal.
- LED assemblies: If the LED tail section fails, the whole lamp usually needs replacing. Use quality, ADR-compliant parts. Some variants may require a scan tool to clear BCM fault codes.
- Upgrades: If retrofitting LEDs to a bulb model, use CANbus-compatible units or proper load modules to avoid bulb-out warnings and flicker.
For roadworthy and WoF checks, tail-lights must shine a steady red, be visible at appropriate distances, and show no white light to the rear. Keeping the lenses clean, the seals healthy and the electrics tidy helps the Transit stay safe, visible and legal on Aussie and Kiwi roads.
FAQs
Are the 2022 Ford Transit tail-lights LED or bulbs?
It depends on the trim and market. Many vans run conventional replaceable bulbs, while some higher-spec or optioned models use LED assemblies. The easiest way to confirm is to check the owner’s manual, the lamp markings, or the build plate/VIN data.
How do you replace a 2022 Transit tail-light or bulb?
Open the rear door, remove the lamp retaining screws, ease the cluster away, and twist out the bulb holders to replace the correct bulb type. For LED variants, the complete lamp usually needs swapping over. Always test all rear lights before refitting and avoid overtightening the screws.
Why do my tail-lights flicker or show a bulb warning after fitting LEDs?
The Transit’s BCM monitors circuit load. Non-CANbus LEDs can trigger warnings or flicker. Use CANbus-rated LED bulbs or appropriate load modules, or choose ADR-compliant LED lamp assemblies designed for the vehicle.
