2022 Ford Escape wheel-hubs

Wheel-hubs are absolutely used on the 2022 Ford Escape. Ford’s Workshop Manual for the 2020–2022 Escape (Front Suspension 204-01 and Rear Suspension 204-02) details bolt-in hub and bearing assemblies at each corner, and the Ford parts catalogue lists complete hub/bearing units with integrated wheel speed encoder rings. That means the Escape relies on sealed hub assemblies rather than serviceable, greasable bearings.

On this model, the wheel-hub is the sturdy centre that the wheel bolts to, designed to carry vehicle weight, keep the brake rotor true, and house the sealed bearing that lets the wheel spin smoothly. It also incorporates the ABS/traction control encoder, so it’s doing more than just holding the wheel on — it’s feeding live data to the safety systems. AWD variants use splined hubs front and rear for the driveshafts, while FWD models have splined fronts and non-splined rears.

Because the bearings are sealed, there’s no greasing or adjustment. Maintenance is mainly about inspection and good installation practice:

  • Listen for a steady humming or growl that rises with speed, or changes when gently swerving — classic early hub bearing noise.
  • Feel for play at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions with the wheel off the ground
