For FWD 2004 Transits, the CV boots do an unglamorous but vital job: they keep high-moly grease inside the CV joints and keep out water, grit, and road grime. Those joints let the front wheels put power down while turning and moving up and down over bumps, which is why intact boots matter. When a boot cracks or splits, grease gets flung around the inner guard and rim, and the joint quickly runs dry. Left like that, the joint can start clicking on lock, vibrate under load, and eventually fail — a costlier fix than a simple boot swap.
