2021 Subaru Outback steering bushes — are they actually used?
For the 2021 Subaru Outback (BT series), separate “steering bushes” for the rack aren’t a thing. Technical documentation shows the electric power steering (EPS) rack is rigidly bolted to the front crossmember without serviceable rack-mount bushings. The Subaru Service Manual for MY21 Outback (Steering > Electric Power Steering, Gearbox and Tie-Rod sections) describes direct rack-to-crossmember mounting with specified bolt torques and no replaceable bushes. Likewise, Subaru’s parts catalogue for Front Steering Gear & Linkage lists the steering gear as a complete assembly and does not list any standalone rack-mount cushion/bush items. Subaru’s Global Platform technical brief also notes a stiffer front structure with a rigidly mounted EPS unit to sharpen steering response and reduce compliance.
That design is deliberate. By hard-mounting the EPS rack, Subaru cuts out the squish and flex a rubber bush would add, so the wheel talks back more directly and the car feels more precise on-centre. Noise, vibration and harshness are managed by the stiffer body, tuned subframe isolation, and the column joints, rather than by soft bushes under the steering rack.
So if there’s a knock, vibration, or vague feel through the wheel on a 2021 Outback, chasing “steering bushes” won’t get far—there aren’t any to replace at the rack. A proper check should focus on the usual suspects: inner and outer tie-rod ends, front lower control arm bushes, sway bar bushes and links, strut top mounts, wheel bearings, and wheel alignment. The intermediate steering shaft joints can also develop play or a notchy feel. If free play is inside the rack itself, the factory path is steering gear replacement rather than a rack-bush kit.
For servicing, stick to regular inspections at each service interval: look for torn dust boots on the tie-rods, uneven tyre wear, or any clunks over sharp bumps. If the rack has been removed, use new fasteners where Subaru specifies and torque them to spec—don’t improvise with aftermarket “bush kits”, as they’re not designed for this model and can amplify NVH or affect safety and compliance.
Does the 2021 Subaru Outback have replaceable steering rack bushes?
No. On the BT-series Outback, the EPS rack is bolted directly to the front crossmember with no separate, serviceable rack-mount bushes. The factory service manual details direct mounting, and the Subaru parts catalogue does not list standalone rack bush components. If there’s excessive play at the rack, the approved fix is steering gear replacement.
What should be checked if there’s a steering clunk or vague feel?
Look to wear items that do exist on this model: inner and outer tie-rod ends, front lower control arm bushes, sway bar links and bushes, and strut top mounts. Also check wheel bearings, tyre pressures and alignment, and the intermediate steering shaft joints. Any EPS-related faults should be scanned and calibrated by a workshop with Subaru-capable diagnostics.
Can aftermarket polyurethane steering bushes be fitted to improve feel?
Not for the rack on the 2021 Outback—no compatible rack-mount bush kits are specified for this model. The rack is designed to be rigidly mounted. Attempting to add or modify bushes can increase NVH, affect steering geometry under load, and may jeopardise warranty or certification. For sharper feel, start with fresh tie-rods, quality tyres, correct pressures, and an accurate alignment.
