2020 Ford Focus MAP sensor — what it does and how to look after it
Technical sources confirm the 2020 Ford Focus (C519 platform) uses a MAP-type sensor. Ford Workshop Manual Section 303-14 (Fuel Charging and Controls) for C519 engines details an Intake Manifold Absolute Pressure/Temperature sensor (often called IMAP), and Motorcraft service wiring diagrams show both an IMAP on the manifold and a charge-air pressure/temperature sensor (TMAP) in the boost tract on EcoBoost variants. Ford’s parts catalogues for 2019–2021 Focus list these sensors for 1.0 and 1.5L EcoBoost petrol, 2.3L ST, and EcoBlue diesel engines. Many Focus engines run a speed-density strategy (no separate MAF), relying on MAP/IMAP data.
On the 2020 Ford Focus, the MAP sensor feeds the engine computer accurate intake pressure data so it can calculate engine load, fuel delivery, spark timing and, on turbo models, boost control. It also helps with altitude compensation and, on diesels, plays a part in EGR and smoke control. When it’s healthy, the car feels crisp, starts cleanly and sips fuel the way it should.
This isn’t a routine replacement item, it’s serviced on condition. What’s smart is a quick check under the bonnet at service time:
- Inspect the connector and loom for chafing, oil wicking or broken locks.
- Look for oil mist or dust contamination on and around the sensor, especially on turbo models.
- If cleaning is needed, use a plastic-safe electronics/contact cleaner that leaves no residue. Don’t poke the sensing element.
Symptoms of a crook MAP sensor include sluggish acceleration, rough idle, hard starting, poor fuel economy, black smoke on diesels, and the MIL on with codes like P0106, P0107 or P0108. Before blaming the sensor, rule out split vacuum or boost hoses, clogged air filters, and intake leaks—those can skew pressure readings and mimic a failed sensor.
Replacement is straightforward: key off, disconnect the plug, remove the retaining fastener(s), and pull the sensor straight out. Renew the O-ring seal, lightly oil it, and install the new unit squarely. Tighten to the specification in Ford service info (don’t overtighten plastic housings), reconnect, then clear codes and perform a short drive so the ECU can relearn trims. On many Focus variants there are two pressure sensors (IMAP on the manifold and a TMAP in the charge pipe), confirm which one is flagged before ordering parts. Using genuine or OE-equivalent sensors keeps readings stable and drivability spot on—worth it on Aussie and Kiwi roads where dust and long kilometres can expose cheap parts quickly.
