2020 Ford Everest harmonic balancer: what it does and when to replace it
Based on Ford technical literature, the 2020 Ford Everest is fitted with a crankshaft vibration damper (commonly called a harmonic balancer). The Ford Workshop Manual for Everest/Ranger (2020) under Section 303-01: Engine details removal/installation of the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper and specifies a torque-to-yield, single-use crank bolt and a crankshaft locking procedure—clear evidence the part is present and serviceable. The Ford Microcat (AU/NZ) parts catalogue also lists a “Vibration Damper—Crankshaft” for both the 2.0L Bi-Turbo EcoBlue and 3.2L Duratorq TDCi engines used in the 2020 Everest.
On the 2020 Ford Everest, the harmonic balancer lives on the nose of the crankshaft and doubles as the accessory drive pulley. Its job is to soak up crankshaft torsional vibration so the engine runs smoother, the belt system behaves itself and long-term stress on the crank, bearings and timing system is kept in check. The inner hub is bonded to an outer ring with a tuned rubber isolator, that rubber is the magic that turns nasty twists into harmless heat.
It’s not a routine replacement item, but it deserves a look at regular services. If the rubber perishes, swells from oil contamination, or the outer ring shifts, the Everest can show annoying driveline shudders or eat belts. Left too long, a failed damper can wobble, throw the belt or, worst case, damage the crank.
- Tell-tales to watch for: a wobbling crank pulley at idle, fresh rubber dust or cracking in the damper, belt squeal or frayed ribs, or a buzz through the cabin that wasn’t there before.
Good workshop practice on these engines is straightforward:
- Inspect the damper and front seal area every 60,000 km (or any time the belt/tensioner is off). Fix oil leaks promptly—oil is unkind to the damper’s rubber bond.
- If the damper is removed, always renew the crankshaft bolt and follow Ford’s torque-to-yield procedure with the correct crank locking tool. Don’t mark-time it with a rattle gun.
- Avoid belt dressings. If a belt chirps, check alignment, tensioner and the damper’s runout instead.
- Use quality OEM or equivalent dampers, cheap units can be poorly bonded and go out of tune.
DIY-capable owners can handle visual checks under the bonnet, but replacement is best left to a technician with the right locking fixtures and torque angles. Done properly, the Everest’s harmonic balancer will keep things smooth for years of Aussie and Kiwi touring.

How long do harmonic balancers last on an Everest?
There’s no fixed interval. Many last well past 150,000 km, but age, heat and oil leaks can shorten life. Check for rubber cracking, pulley wobble, odd vibrations or recurring belt noise at each major service.
Is it safe to keep driving if the pulley is wobbling or the rubber looks perished?
Not recommended. A failing damper can shed the belt or damage the crank nose. Park it and arrange an inspection—if the damper’s compromised, replace it and fit a new crank bolt using Ford’s specified procedure.
