2019 Volvo XC60 wheel hubs — what they do and when to replace them

Based on Volvo’s VIDA workshop information and Genuine Parts catalogue for the SPA-platform XC60 (MY2019), as well as major bearing manufacturers’ catalogues commonly used by workshops, the 2019 Volvo XC60 is fitted with bolt-in, sealed wheel hub and bearing assemblies front and rear. So yes, wheel hubs are absolutely relevant on this model.

The wheel hub assembly does the heavy lifting at each corner of the XC60. It locates the wheel, allows it to spin smoothly via an integrated sealed bearing, and keeps things tracking straight while managing braking and cornering loads. On this Volvo, the hub also works with the ABS/ESC system via an encoder ring that the wheel speed sensor reads, so a crook hub can show up as warning lights as well as noise.

Being sealed-for-life, XC60 wheel hubs don’t need routine greasing or adjustment. Servicing is mostly about inspection: listen for a low, speed-dependent hum or growl that changes when the steering is lightly loaded left or right, feel for play when rocking the tyre at 12 and 6 o’clock, and watch for ABS/traction warnings or uneven tyre wear. Any heat or blueing around the hub after a drive can also be a giveaway.

If a hub’s on the way out, replacement is the fix. A typical job involves removing the wheel, brake caliper and rotor, disconnecting the wheel speed sensor harness, unbolting the hub from the knuckle and, where applicable, removing the axle nut (FWD/AWD variants). Clean the mating face, fit the new unit, and torque all fasteners and the axle nut to Volvo spec using a calibrated torque wrench. It’s smart to use a new axle nut where specified, and to torque the wheel bolts correctly when refitting the wheel.

There’s no set kilometre interval—many XC60 hubs run well past 150,000 km—but potholes, curb impacts, and big temperature swings can shorten life. Replace the faulty side first, then assess the other side based on age and kilometres. After any hub or bearing work, a wheel alignment check is a good shout to keep tyres wearing evenly.

  • Common symptoms: humming/rumbling with speed, ABS/ESC lights, steering vibration, wheel play
  • Good practice: inspect during tyre rotations and brake services, keep wheel bolts torqued to spec

FAQs

Does the 2019 Volvo XC60 use serviceable bearings or sealed hub units?
It uses sealed, bolt-in hub and bearing assemblies. There’s no periodic greasing or adjustment—when worn, the whole hub unit is replaced. This design improves durability and keeps contaminants out.

What are the tell-tale signs of a failing XC60 wheel hub?
A steady humming that gets louder with road speed, a change in noise when loading the car slightly left or right, ABS/traction warnings, or detectable play when rocking the wheel. Uneven tyre wear and heat around the hub after a drive can also hint at bearing trouble.

Should both front (or rear) hubs be replaced together?
Not strictly. Replace the confirmed faulty side and assess the other based on kilometres and condition. On higher‑km vehicles or where both sides show similar wear, doing them in pairs can save time and a second alignment visit.
