Ignition Leads on the 2019 Toyota Corolla: Are They Needed?
The 2019 Toyota Corolla does not use traditional ignition leads, also known as spark plug wires. This is because modern vehicles like the 2019 Corolla are equipped with coil-on-plug ignition systems rather than the older distributor and ignition lead setup. In this coil-on-plug system, each spark plug has its own dedicated ignition coil mounted directly on top of it, which eliminates the need for ignition leads to carry high-voltage electricity from a central coil pack to the spark plugs. This design improves ignition efficiency, reduces maintenance requirements, and enhances overall engine performance.
Ignition leads were a critical component in older-style ignition systems used on cars from previous decades. Their job was to carry the electrical current from the ignition coil to the spark plugs, ensuring the spark needed for combustion in the engine's cylinders. Ignition leads needed to be well insulated and in good condition to deliver a strong and consistent spark. However, over time, manufacturers realised that these leads were prone to wear, cracking and causing misfires, especially as the kilometres added up. Hence, they moved to coil-on-plug systems which cut out the need for spark plug wires altogether.
This means that when owning or servicing a 2019 Toyota Corolla, there is no need to worry about ignition leads. Instead, attention is focused on maintaining the ignition coils themselves and other elements of the ignition system. This comes with benefits like fewer parts to replace and generally more reliable ignition performance.
