2019 Holden Commodore brake shoes — are they used?

Short answer: brake shoes aren’t used on the 2019 Holden Commodore (ZB). This model runs four-wheel disc brakes, with the rear discs paired to calipers that incorporate an electric parking brake (EPB). There’s no drum-in-hat parking brake and therefore no separate brake shoes to service. This setup is confirmed across Holden/GM ZB Commodore service information (Brake System – ZB/Insignia B platform), the Owner’s Manual noting the electric park brake acting on the rear brake system, and major parts catalogues (ACDelco and Bendix) which list pads and rotors for 2019 Commodore but no brake shoes.

Why no shoes? The ZB Commodore is built on GM’s E2XX/Opel Insignia B platform, engineered for full disc braking performance and an integrated EPB. Instead of a small drum mechanism inside the rear rotor, the EPB motor operates the rear caliper, clamping the regular pads onto the rotor when parked. It’s a lighter, cleaner design with fewer wear items and better resistance to water and road grime than traditional drum shoes.

What should owners focus on instead? Rear brake pads and rotors. During servicing, technicians inspect pad thickness, rotor condition, and EPB operation. When replacing rear pads, the EPB must be retracted via the vehicle’s service mode or an appropriate scan tool—forcing the pistons back can damage the EPB motor and gears. Quality replacement pads, correct rotor specs, proper slide-lube, and torque settings are the priorities on this car, not shoe adjustment or drum cleaning.

  • Tell-tales it’s time: brake noise, vibration under braking, longer stopping distances, or a brake warning message.
  • Service cadence: visual checks at every service
