2019 Holden Astra throttle position sensor: what it does and when to service it
The 2019 Holden Astra (BK – Opel Astra K) absolutely uses a throttle position sensor, but it’s not a separate, old-school, cable-era sender. It’s built into the electronic throttle body and works alongside the accelerator pedal position sensors. Holden/GM Service Information for the BK Astra describes an electronic throttle control system with dual, redundant TPS circuits inside the throttle body, and the factory DTC list includes TPS/ETC faults like P0121, P0122, P0123, P0220 and P2135. Genuine parts catalogues for the BK Astra also list the throttle body as an assembly with the TPS integrated. So yes—this vehicle has TPS, and it’s central to how the engine is managed.
What does it do? The TPS tracks the throttle plate angle so the engine control module can finely meter fuel, ignition and boost, keep the idle stable, and deliver smooth torque. The Astra’s setup uses two independent TPS signals for safety and accuracy, if they disagree, the computer throws a warning and can drop the car into Reduced Engine Power to protect the drivetrain.
How do you know it’s playing up? Look for a check engine light, “Reduced Engine Power” messages, lazy throttle response, hunting idle, stalling coming to a stop, rough shifts in autos, or higher-than-usual fuel use. Scan data will often show stored codes relating to throttle/pedal position, correlation or performance.
- There’s no scheduled replacement for the TPS, it’s a monitor-and-fix-when-needed item.
- On the Astra, the TPS is part of the throttle body. If it fails, the usual remedy is to replace the throttle body assembly with a new gasket.
- A throttle learn/reset is required after replacement (and often after battery disconnect or a heavy clean). A scan tool makes this quick and reliable.
Maintenance tips? Keep the intake tract tidy, the air filter fresh, and the battery/charging system healthy—low voltage is a classic trigger for ETC/TPS complaints. If cleaning is needed, remove the throttle body and use a quality throttle-body-safe cleaner sparingly, avoid scrubbing coatings on the plate and bore. Refit with the correct torque on fasteners, check for vacuum leaks, then perform the throttle/idle learn so it settles into a stable idle.
Done right, a replacement throttle body on the BK Astra is a straightforward job for a workshop, and it restores crisp pedal feel and confident drivability.
Does the 2019 Holden Astra have a throttle position sensor?
Yes. It uses an electronic throttle body with two internal throttle position sensors, plus accelerator pedal position sensors. There isn’t a separate, external TPS like older cable-throttle setups.
Can the TPS be replaced on its own, or is it part of the throttle body?
On the BK Astra, the TPS is integrated into the throttle body. If the sensor fails or readings don’t correlate, the fix is typically a complete throttle body replacement, followed by a throttle/idle learn with a scan tool.
Do I need a relearn after battery disconnect or throttle cleaning/replacement?
It’s highly recommended. The Astra’s ECU needs to relearn the throttle plate’s home and travel limits. Many workshops use a scan-tool procedure, some vehicles will relearn after a controlled idle cycle, but using a tool is faster and more reliable.
