2018 Toyota RAV4 temperature sensors
Technical sources confirm temperature sensors are absolutely fitted to the 2018 Toyota RAV4. Toyota’s Factory Repair Manual and Electrical Wiring Diagram for the 2AR-FE/2AR-FXE engines, along with Toyota Genuine Parts catalogues, list multiple temperature sensors including the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, ambient (outside) air temperature sensor for the A/C, and a transmission fluid temperature sensor. Hybrid variants also use inverter and HV battery temperature sensing.
On a 2018 RAV4, these sensors do the quiet heavy lifting every trip. The ECT sensor lets the engine ECU know exactly how warm the motor is so it can sort fuelling, ignition timing and cold-start behaviour. The IAT sensor helps trim mixtures for Aussie and Kiwi climate swings. The ambient sensor feeds the climate control and the outside temp display, while the transmission fluid temperature sensor protects the auto from heat stress. In the hybrid, extra sensors keep the power electronics and battery pack in the safe zone.
- Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT): anchors warm-up strategy, fan control and gauge readings.
- Intake Air Temperature (IAT): fine-tunes fuelling for performance and economy.
- Ambient Air Temperature: drives A/C logic and the dash temperature reading.
- Transmission Fluid Temperature: safeguards shift quality and gearbox longevity.
They’re not routine “service items”, but they should be checked whenever there’s a cooling, A/C or drivability complaint, a warning light, or related fault codes (for example P0115–P0119 for ECT, P0071–P0073 for ambient). During scheduled cooling system service (Toyota Super Long Life Coolant at the factory interval), it’s smart to inspect sensor connectors and harnesses for corrosion, broken clips or rub-through.
- ECT replacement: Work on a cold engine, relieve pressure, drain enough coolant below sensor level, swap the sensor and sealing washer, torque to the Toyota spec, refill with SLLC and bleed properly. Verify readings with a scan tool.
- Ambient sensor: Mounted behind the grille/bumper reinforcement
