2018 Toyota RAV4 Brake Pads — What They Do and When to Replace

Brake pads are absolutely fitted to the 2018 Toyota RAV4. Toyota service literature for the XA40-series RAV4 specifies front ventilated disc brakes with pads on all grades, and rear brakes that are either solid disc (with pads) or drum (with shoes) depending on variant and market. This is supported by Toyota Owner’s Manual specifications and Repair Manual procedures, and by Australian/NZ parts catalogues from major brake manufacturers that list front and (on most grades) rear pads for the 2013–2018 RAV4.

On this RAV4, the brake pads are the friction heroes: when the driver presses the pedal, hydraulic pressure squeezes the pads against the rotors to slow the wheels. Quality pads keep pedal feel consistent, reduce stopping distances, and minimise noise and dust. Because they turn kinetic energy into heat, they wear gradually and need periodic inspection and replacement to keep braking sharp and dependable in Aussie and Kiwi conditions—from city commutes to winding coastal roads.

As part of routine servicing, it’s smart to have pad thickness checked at least every 10,000 km or at each service visit. Many owners will see pads last anywhere from about 30,000 to 70,000 km, but lifespan varies with driving style, loads, hills, and towing. Replace the pads as a set on each axle when the friction material is down to around 3 mm, or sooner if there’s glazing, cracking, or uneven wear. Toyota repair data specifies a service limit around 1 mm for pad lining, but most workshops recommend renewing earlier for safety and comfort. Always inspect the rotors at the same time and compare their thickness to the minimum stamped on the rotor hat
