A returnless EFI setup puts the fine filter and strainer in the tank to reduce evaporative emissions, maintain consistent pressure and flow, and cut down on extra joints that can leak or restrict. With today’s cleaner petrol, the in-tank element is intended to be “maintenance free” under normal conditions.
Owners still have protection from contaminants: the pump module houses a pre-filter strainer and a fine element. There’s simply no scheduled interval to change it. If the vehicle shows signs of fuel starvation or low pressure, a technician will test fuel pressure/volume and, if required, service the pump module. Situations that may warrant attention include contaminated or stale fuel, water ingress, rust from a degraded tank, or after-market debris.
