2018 Mazda CX-5 receiver-driers: what they do and when to replace
Technical sources indicate the 2018 Mazda CX-5 does use a receiver-drier, but it’s integrated into the A/C condenser rather than being a separate canister. The Mazda Workshop Manual for the CX-5 (KF series) HVAC section describes the condenser as housing a desiccant element (receiver-drier) and specifies replacement when the system has been opened. On this CX-5, the receiver-drier’s job is to filter debris, trap moisture and provide a small reservoir of liquid refrigerant on the high-pressure side before the thermal expansion valve. Moisture is the enemy of an A/C system, it forms acids, corrodes internals and can create ice that restricts flow. The desiccant inside the receiver-drier soaks up that moisture so the rest of the system can stay healthy and cool properly.
Because the desiccant becomes saturated over time or quickly if the system is opened to air, the receiver-drier is considered a routine-replacement item whenever the A/C loop is disturbed. On the 2018 CX-5 that usually means swapping the condenser’s internal desiccant bag or, if the condenser design for that VIN isn’t serviceable, replacing the whole condenser assembly.
